ECCO_TS
(Enhanced Coastal Climate Observatory for Transformation and Sustainability)
ECCO_TS will enhance the adaptation capacity of the Catalan coast by linking three main research components:
Coastal Climate Change Observatory (C3O), aggregating all the available information relevant to characterize the pilot coast, define criticalities, identify key driver and response variables, determine the consequences associated with extreme events, and assess vulnerabilities and risks.
Coastal Climate Warning System (CCWS), extending the concept of early warning systems from short-term to medium- and long-term time scales, to optimize the implementation of maintenance and adaptation measures using a predictive approach.
Transformation of the maritime and coastal engineering approach to adaptation, fostering a shift from traditional civil engineering solutions to more sustainable interventions, through the introduction of NbS and hybrid alternatives, supported by the C3O and the CCWS.
ECCO_TS will focus on the Barcelona/Baix Llobregat coast, from Gavà to the mouth of the Besòs River, considering urban beaches, semi-natural beaches, and ports, and the presence of two rivers (Besòs and Llobregat) with their deltas. An extension of the C3O to the rest of the Catalan coast will also be proposed, based on cases of high climate vulnerability with different characteristics, such as the Tordera delta (Girona), the Maresme coast (Barcelona) and selected stretches of the Tarragona coast.
ECCO_TS is structured in the following 6 Tasks:
T1: Coastal characterization with multisource data
T2: Coupled modelling and multidisciplinary calibration and validation
T3: Hazards, valuations and risks
T4: Pathways for adaptation with interventions and tipping points
T5: Coastal transformation through adaptation
T6: Project management: coordination, capacity building and dissemination
